CCAN‘S Projects past, present and future

Capreol Cemetery Rejuvenation.
Virginia Langis spearheaded this project with the help of many volunteers. On May 9, 2003 fifteen volunteers and 20 grade 5 C.R. Judd students did a massive clean up of the Capreol Cemetery. Community members also contributed $180.00 towards the purchase of supplies and plants as well as donated plants and seeds for the creation of a new flower garden and a wall of remembrance.
CCAN would like to thank Capreol Pro Hardware, Capreol Lions Club, Capreol Legion, the Knights of Columbus, the Rebecca Lodge and the many volunteers and donators.
Plans are in the works for another cleanup this spring of the cemetery as well of the creation of more flowerbeds. So if you would like to volunteer or have seeds or plants you would like to donate contact Virginia at 858 3462 or myself (Gary Gray) at 858 0536 or garygray@tyenet.com or through our CCAN website email address.

Capreol Highway Clean up and Adopt A Highway.
On Sept 5, 2003 Kathy Del Papa and Randy Crisp suggested that the CCAN become involved in the “adopt a highway” program. Kathy, Randy and Chris Naylor committee this project and on Oct 18, 24 volunteers faced inclement weather and gathered over 400 kilograms of garbage (120 bags) along the Capreol highway between the Capreol Bowling Alley and Suez Drive.
The Capreol Lions club donated cases of drinking water while the city supplied gloves, garbage bags and garbage pickup.
Planes are in the works for a spring cleanup. If you are interest you can contact CCAN using our email or phone Virginia at 858 3462 or through our CCAN website email address.

Capreol Family Resource Centre/Youth Arts Group.
In May of 2003 Sari Huhtala suggested the creation of a Youth Arts Group in Capreol similar to the “Myths and Mirrors” in Sudbury. This group would cater to the 11 to 20 yrs old with activities that include art, mask making, theatre, stilt walking, graffiti and community murals.

On Jan 15, 2004 Sari proposed the creation of a family resource centre to assist single parents and two parents families within our community. The family resource centre will consist of several components: a toy lending library, a community kitchen, babysitting co-op, a baby/child clothing exchange, a career clothing exchange, a helping hands data base, a parent support group, monthly workshops, and resume writing and career prep assistance.

Sari is looking for volunteers to assist with these projects as well as volunteers to become committee members. Sari can be contacted at 858-4430 or chacha@isys.ca or through our CCAN website email address.

Ethics Campaign.
Jake McAuley proposed this project on Dec 11, 2003. The concept behind this project is that since everyone has a conscience, by raising the community conscience levels the quality of life would also elevate. This concept was evolved by the organization “Foundation for a Better Life” and has had much success. Their belief is that people should strive to be their best and to treat people like we all want to be treated, with dignity and appreciation and this is illustrated through their billboards and television commercials.

With a very generous contribution from the Capreol Lions Club and a contribution from one of our CCAN members,
this project became a reality when a billboard appeared at the former Nepitt’s Grocery Store (space was donated by Dave Kilgour) with a picture of Wayne Gretsky and the message “nice guys do finish first”.

If you would like more info about this project contact Jake at 858 3184 or mcauley@isys.ca. or through our CCAN website email address.

Capreol Biathlon.
This project came into being on June 5, 2003 when Luke Noel suggested Capreol host the Department of National Defence’s annual winter biathlon and also create a training site in Capreol. About 350 cadets and their parents would attend Department of National Defence’s biathlon, which would be a weekend event. Mike Bellrose, Virginia Langis, and Stan Finnson volunteered to subcommittee this project. If you are interested in more information on this project contact please contact Mike at 858 2040 or at mikebev@isys.ca, Virginia at 858 3462, or Stan at 858 1595 or through our CCAN website email address.

Pictorial Historical Record of the Capreol Cemetery. This project was suggested on March 13, 2003 by Randy Crisp and it will be affiliated with the Railway Museum. A historical record of the Capreol cemetery will be created with the use of photographs as well as text. Also, the making of a cemetery site map may be included with this project. Randy and Karen Crisp and Gary Gray will committee this project.

At present a computer database is being created using information obtained from the “Capreol Cemetery Transcription” created by the Sudbury Ontario Genealogical Society. This information will be updated this summer as well as the taking of pictures. There is a possibility that when this project is completed it will be available on line.

More information can be obtain from Randy at 858 2022 or myself (Gary Gray) at 858 0536 or garygray@tyenet.com or through our CCAN website email address. We are looking for volunteers to make the cemetery site map.

Below are possible future projects if we can find volunteers to take on the task.

1) Creation of an updated community phone directory.

2) Rejuvenation of the Lakeshore beach and playground area.

3) Improvements to Ella Lake playground equipment.

4) Addition of benches to the downtown core.

5) High School reunion possibly with the Capreol Days celebrations.

6) Creation of a volunteer skills data bank.

7) Creation of a park in the downtown core using the property across from the CNR. Plants, small trees, and benches. Site map showing downtown core for VIA passengers and tourists.

8) Creation of a war memorial wall showing pictures, letters, and newspaper articles of Capreol’s citizens who served with the military. This project should involve the Capreol Legion and the Railway Museum. This should be incorporated with topic 7.

9) Creation of an all year round composting centre in Capreol and the creation of a flower seeds, bulbs and plant exchange.

10) Creation of a map located as you enter town showing business and landmarks.

TREE PLANTING
Volunteers are needed to plant trees (8 cm seedlings) around the ski club on Saturday on May 1 at 9:00a.m.. Duration will be one to two hours. If interested please contact Stan Finnson at 858-1595. Stan asks if possible, could planters bring a round mouth shovel with them.
A barbeque at the ski club is planed for the planters after the plant.
Mike Bellrose and some students from C.R. Judd have already offered their services. A BBQ for the volunteers follows the planting.
