Comments on Life today in Capreol
My father, Ed (Eddie) Deneka was a teacher in Capreol in the 60’s. I lived there for the first 5 years of my life until my dad’s death in 1968. I have very few memories of my father as I was so young at the time of his death (he was only 32 when he passed). I do; however, remember my dad taking me to Del Papa’s store in the pouring rain because I wanted peanut butter cups and orange pop. He got all wet getting in and out of the car, and he was slightly annoyed, but he bought me my treats and he was my hero.

I recall my dad taking me to his classroom while he marked papers and let me draw on the blackboard with chalk. I felt so privileged and important to have an entire blackboard to myself! I remember being very proud when my dad dropped in to visit my kindergarten class at C.R. Judd Public School.
My teacher’s name was Miss Barr. Capreol for me, will always be my first home at a time in my life when I felt completely safe and happy and proud of my dad. Such a short time spent there, but such a huge impression made on a little girl.

Hi! Gary,

My sister-in-law, Margo Lusk(who still lives in Capreol), turned me on to Capreol Online. I was not aware of the site.

I have visited the site several times in the last few months and I must say I'm very impressed.

I was president of Capreol Minor Hockey back in the 1970's and while I'm quite interested in the total content on the site, I especially enjoy reviewing the "Looking Back" page.

I was born in Capreol into a railroad family and spent 35 yrs., with CN in various capacities. My wife Gloria and I moved back to Capreol twice. The first time was in 1953-54 and the second was from 1970-79. Our boys attended C.R. Judd Public School and our oldest Marty attented Capreol High. They both played hockey and were members of the Capreol Hawks travelling teams, as we called them back then.

Marty player from Atom thru Midget, and Doug played, Atom thru PeeWee. I was a House League Convener, Coach, Manager and President during part of the 70's.

I just called up the story on the Capreol Hotel Colts (Bantam) team, and read Nathan Higgins letter re this team. He is quite correct, that the goalie in the picture identified as Greg Telenko, is in fact Bruce MacDougall from Chelmsford. I due believe, that dressed in goalie equipment, they do look very much alike, however, Greg was a notch below Bantam at the time. I believe we knocked Chelmsford off in the playoffs and then were allowed to pick up young MacDougall due to the hospitalization of Nathan.

There is one other error I would like to see corrected, and that is in "The Story of The Capreol Hawks". When Marshall Edwards refers to the President of Capreol Minor Hockey approaching him with the idea of calling all the travelling teams as "The Capreol Hawks" he states he belives that Bob Lusk approached him with the idea. I did have a brother named Bob, and at one time he did live in Capreol, he nevertheless, was never involved in minor hockey and was in a much earlier era. The Lusk mentioned by Marshall was yours truly. As Marshall and my brother Bob were much closer in age, I'm sure Marshall meant no disrespect to me, and as we all get a little older our memories tend to fade. With Marshall's approval we called all the travelling teams "The Capreol Hawks" and they were dressed all the same. We also ordered thru Rudy Mazzuca, bright red jackets with the "Hawk" crest, and the town was swathed in red, as was every arena we attended. This decision was not mine alone, but the collective thoughts of our Minor Hockey Executive of the time.

Again, let me say how much I enjoy the site, keep up the good work as I'm sure there are many more ex Capreolites who enjoy it as much as I do.

Respectfully,

Edward (Ed) Ira Lusk

I wanted to say great website.

One issue as a former resident of Capreol is the garbage dumped along the old water well roads, off Shaw Street and Vaughn. One can find old mattresses, pop cans, and just about everything else dumped along the roads, in the woods, and in the pond at the end of one of the roads. This walkway was, in my day, used for walking and from what I recall, many people enjoyed the walk. It was so nice to see the trees in summer bloom, and with the mountains in the background, a great retreat! I wanted to urge the Capreol council to initiate a monthly cleanup of the area. Posted signs warning of “no dumping” would also be useful.

Regards,

Former resident.

Capreol - A Big Bum Town?

I am starting to find that Capreol is becoming a really big bum town.
It would be alot nicer if we took down cheers and the old spike& rail [Daphne's].
And maybe getting a Tim Horton's down here.
Since most of us are always out driving to Hanmer, and with the expense of gas these day; why not just take a walk downtown to tim horton's? it's almost summer, and it's beautiful for that. it'll get people out of the house.

Or we could even turn Daphne's/Spike& Rail into a pet shop,no?
it wuld make money.
Have poeple bring puppies, kittens and others.
THose willing to buy animals fdon't have to go so far.
And having a Tim Horton's and pet shop would give some of us
a job to do during school.
It's in town and nice enough to walk so why not?
There arent't many places for us 16yr olds to work over here.

But thats just my opinion.

THANKS.

Where is the respect?

I am hearing a lot about the Citizens on Patrol and the good work they are or have done. Yet, we are still hearing about the vandalism.

April, I am out walking with cane in hand and a young repeated offender assaults myself and another person then has the nerve to show up on my back step to continue this.

Hearing about vehicles being taken out of yards, tires flattened.

Young kids across the street with pack sacks full of beer, opened bottles in their hands standing around publicly drinking.

My pumpkin man sitting on my back deck in a well lit setting, the head is stolen.

My neighbour, 58 years old is looking out her side door watching for her daughters arrival, young kids in a car drive by, see her and call her a bitch and ask what she is looking at. They come down the back, unlit dark lane from the arena where every weekend there is a crowd of young people huddled together way into the night.

ATV's driving down the streets after midnight up and down until 2:30 am..

Flowers and patio lights stolen and smashed in & around the town hall.

Shall I go on, where I am sure many other things happen?

I understand this patrol cannot be everywhere at once but on Monday mornings I am hearing many happenings that took place over the weekend for starters.

Now the flags being ripped down. Why is it the citizens of Capreol see all this but no one else?

Where are the parents, they don't see their children are not home by midnight? They should start being responsible for their children. I think it should be like years ago in Capreol a curfew and if you are caught you are charged or have to do community work.

Like it is said of them by Gary and the police: "PUNKS" !. Yes, shame on them and their parents. Where is the respect, obviously not taught at home so they don't know how to use it in public either.

The other day I passed on the sidewalk a young male about 8 years old and now more walking toward me, school bag on his back. Never spoke to this child before, but from the others yelling at him I got he was waiting for the bus and forgot something at home. As I had seen him coming out of this particular house he was about 2 houses away, he turned to me and commented," hey you lady,do you want to give me a piggy back to my house I need to get something"?  Now in my days I would never, ever, have even thought to ask a stranger yet alone speak like this to an adult. Again, where is the respect being taught?

First Snowfall of the season!

I've read and was told this years snow cleaning of Capreol would be quite different and way better than last.

Upon awakening Saturday morning my street was cleaned but all side streets and lanes were blocked with a bank of snow. About 10:30 a.m. the sidewalk machine appeared and again added to the pile. It is nearing 11:30 a.m. and the lane is still blocked with a snow bank,I am wondering how I am to get my van out at noon, hoping the town is still coming to remove the bank. Not happening so we took the 4 wheeler up and down the high bank to pat down the snow so I could leave with my van without pulling the bottom out of it. Upon approaching Meehan & Dennie there comes a big snow plow, not plowing the street which had already been done ,he is pushing back the snow bank. Right onto the newly cleaned sidewalk, blocking it completely!. So what,it will stay this way or again take tax payers money to come out and re-open this sidewalk? No wonder the lanes do not get opened when it has to be repeatedly cleaning the sidewalks. Since this snowfall, things have frozen over and the lane is in terrible condition, ruts, ice, very hard to walk.

Seems this was the same situation as last year. From what we see nothing has changed. Either the lanes are not cleaned,we call for service or they may get done about 4-6 p.m.We were told by the town of Capreol for years the lanes have to stay opened for fire purposes as many homeowners access to their doors come out onto the lane as well as their garages.

Again I will ask the City of Sudbury: you can guarantee after a snow fall or until you feel like cleaning the lane and on weekends there will not be a fire down one of these lanes?

Seems the same as last year to us.

Wow Capreol
Nice town to have grown up in. Lots of friends, not much to do, but we always found something. Going to the Chinese, seing all our frieds there chating drinking coffee and eating Fay's good chinesse. Putting pennies on the train track, swimming at the Capreol beach. It's to bad the little town looks so empty know. It's always nice to go back and to see familiar faces.

I have noticed on my recent visit to Capreol, that the town is so dead even the grocer's had to close. When my mom was growing up it was a great community. Capreol is a very close-nit town that used to be perfect for raising a family. But let's face it there's nothing the town has to offer these days! A great idea would be creating a town council where a few people from all areas of Capreol attend meetings. I know people have great ideas of what to do with the town...bring back the winter carnival, search for someone to reopen a small theatre, summer competitons and theme dances for teens monthly. Capreol is a safe town and could be an awsome place to live. Maybe more people would choose to live here if the town was booming with family fun. Think about it my cape-town people what did you do last friday???
