Parents, please do not schedule appointments for your children for the mornings of May 31 to June 11. Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart On Thursday, May 6, students participated in our annual Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart Campaign. Each year our energetic students have raised an incredible amount of money. This year was no exception as they brought in an amazing $2079.11 . In the past fourteen years, St. Mary School has raised $46,742.82. The boys and girls had lots of fun while displaying some very skilled skipping techniques and slam dunking. As always we are grateful to our wonderful volunteers who give so generously of their time to help us out in such a big way. We are particularly thankful to Miss O’Reilly for co-ordinating this big event. Faith Day All schools of the Sudbury Catholic School Board came together on May 27 at the Sudbury Arena to celebrate Faith Day. Students from grades 3 to 12 had the opportunity to Rejoice in Hope and be a living witness to their faith. Take a look at the slideshow prepared by Northern Life. The teacher will suggest other items in September. That note will also be posted as a document on the school website. Principal’s message on Forgiveness As our school year comes to an end, we are focused on the virtue of Forgiveness. This value is an important cornerstone of our faith as we reflect on the ultimate sacrifice Jesus made to forgive us all. In our Catholic schools we work to honour and model forgiveness in everything we do. As a Catholic community, we are fortunate to be able to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This is another opportunity for the students to engage in an honest dialogue with god and receive his forgiveness. Congratulations to all of our young students who have recently received the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Let us continue to pray for god’s forgiveness and continue to model it four our children. Before the summer holidays begin, the students will take time to reflect on the past school year. They will examine their actions and behaviours, celebrate their successes and identify areas where improvement may be made. These reflections are generated to help the students create goals for the next school year. We pray that these reflections will be fruitful as we join in grateful thanksgiving for another year of blessings. On behalf of the school, I would like to wish you and your familya safe, relaxing and enjoyable summer vacation until we meet again in September. Thank You, Sudbury Kinsmen The Student Nutrition Program from Sudbury Better Beginnings Better Futures is one of the recipient charities for the Sudbury Kinsmen 26th Showcase Sweepstakes. Funds will allow the opportunity to launch the Student Nutrition Volunteer Recognition Program. Thanks to the Sudbury Kinsmen for helping us recognize our precious volunteers. Recycle Magazines Social Media Link Launched on SCDSB Website In the most recent commitment to the effective use of technology, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board announces that there is a new link on their website (http://www.sudburycatholicschools.ca) that will offer visitors six different ways to follow news and events at SCDSB, including updates through Twitter and a Sudbury Catholic Schools YouTube channel. Staff, students and families will have the opportunity to sign up for news delivered to their inbox, read the latest headlines on their web enabled mobile phones, and quickly access all the best news from Sudbury Catholic Schools in one place on the website. By embracing social media and digital communication, Sudbury Catholic has reinforced the commitment to remain current and work successfully in the Digital Age. Our Lady of Peace Church Two of the factors for review are a significant decline in the number of parishioners attending services, and fewer parishioners to assist with the upkeep and support of aging churches. The Bishop will be inviting parishes to reflect on ways to provide for more effective pastoral planning to meet the challenges of parishes registering a drop in general population and fewer practicing parishioners. Parishes affected will be asked to respond to the review process by March 2010. After further consultation, the Bishop will announce by May 2010 the necessary changes in all pastoral regions. All changes will be implemented by December 31, 2010. St. Mary Catholic School Council encourages all families to support Our Lady of Peace Church Be sure to check out the new school board website http://www.scdsb.edu.on.ca One new feature is the H1N1 information. Registration - JK to Grade 6 Regular Program Parents are asked to call the school (858-2431) and make an appointment for registration. Please bring the following documents to the registration appointment: Birth Certificate, Health Card, Baptismal Certificate and Immunization Card. Health Concerns If your child is sick, he or she should stay home. If you need advice, call the TeleHealth Line at 1-866-797-0000. Wash hands frequently. Cough into your sleeve. Once a kleenex has been used, discard it immediately. We welcome your visit to the school, however, if you have flu symptoms or a fever, please reschedule your visit. Safety All Parents and visitors to the school are asked to come to the office to let us know of your presence in the school. Badges are available for Parent Volunteers and Visitors. On occasion some children will say they do not have to take the bus because someone is picking them up at dismissal time, yet they do not have a note, nor has the office gotten a phone message. If the parent has not arrived by bus time, the child will be sent home by bus. If friends or relatives are picking up your children, parents are asked to advise the school prior to dismissal. Please send a note to the classroom teacher that morning. This will avoid unnecessary interruptions to the classroom. As always, we ask adults to come to the main office where we will contact the classroom teacher to send the students to the office. Parents are asked to call the school prior to 9:00 am should your child be late or absent. This will help us with completing the Safe Arrival Protocol and avoid duplicate phone calls.
