St. Mary Catholic School News - January 2012

Very Important date is February 7,2012 at 6:30p.m.

It is Our Welcome to Kindergarten Registration Evening.

Daily Physical Activity........ Northern Style

Well January may have had it’s fair share of snow days and snow storms, but that did not stop St. Mary Catholic School students from braving the weather. They hit the ground running or shall we saying skiing and snowshoeing on several crisp days in January.

Some of our kindergarten students had opportunities to enjoy their first experiences with snowshoeing and our grade1,2,3 classes learned the steps to cross country skiing. “We are fortunate enough to live in the North where we have opportunities to engage in these types of winter activities,” said teacher Ms. Waern. “ We have to take advantage of the snow and winter weather because it will be gone before we know it, “ said teacher Mr. Merigioli.

So taking advantage of the winter weather is exactly what they did, and they had a fabulous time doing so! The students not only explored the trails behind their school in Capreol, but they learned how to ski and snowshoe while on their expeditions.

Lady of Peace and St. Mary partner to provide to those less fortunate

When Mrs. Paul, Catholic Women’s League president called St. Mary School to elicit the school’s support for the Operation Christmas Child Project, St. Mary’s Catholic School Principal and staff said they would be happy to provide support to such a worthwhile project.

“It’s important that young people in our schools feel they are part of the parish community, and the global community at large. There is no better way to reduce poverty than by participating in goodwill projects,” said principal Sherry Bortolotti.

The school has thanked their school secretary Claire Olivier who passionately embraced this idea and ensured there were enough boxes for every student to give one shoe box stacked with toys, soap, socks, books etc. to a child in need. “I fill good knowing that we’ve made Christmas better for a handful of children, that is the true meaning of Christmas,” said Olivier.

Local Co-ordinator for Operation Christmas Child, Karyn Stenbraaten stated, “The key to being a happy person is giving to others.” St. Mary’s children are happily waiting to take on their next goodwill project.

Daily Physical Activity and Then Some

The primary students at St. Mary recently participated in a Zumba class especially designed for younger children. “The smaller children have to approach the class at a slower pace because their co-ordination skills are just developing,” said instructor Renee

Rainville Fong. Primary students are taught how to move their arms and legs to the music as their instructor teachers them age – appropriate steps. .

Parents, teachers and the whole community received more than their usual allotment of Daily Physical Exercise. “ Zumba is an excellent workout,” said teachers Becky Waern and Dante Merigioli.

A grade 3 student, Rayden Recollect remarked, “Zumba is even harder than playing hockey!” The whole school is eagerly awaiting their next Zumba session.

Primary students, teachers, parents and community members gather around a circle to move to
great music during their Zumba lesson. The children at St. Mary will be receiving regular Zumba lesson throughout the year.

WonderCares Fitness Challenge
St. Mary students will be able to participate in the WonderCares Fitness Challenge. What's so great about the Challenge? By offering simple and fun activities that can easily be integrated in the curriculum and performed during the school day, the WonderCares™ Fitness Challenge can help schools implement mandated Daily Physical Activity (DPA) time in elementary classrooms. The school will receive everything it needs to be part of the fun: exercise posters, program guides and CD's.

Snack Volunteers Needed
We need a volunteer for Wednesday snack preparation. Parents or Grandparents, please contact the office if you are able to volunteer some time Wednesday morning.

Recycle Magazines
Please send magazines to the school to be recycled. All types of magazines are requested. Please send them with your child or bring them directly to the main office. Thanks for your support.

We are collecting.....
The school is continuing to collect Canadian Tire money, Campbell Soup Labels and Lunchmate “Bucks”. Please send these items to school with your child. The school is able to receive items in exchange for what is collected. For example, we are saving Campbell Soup Labels in order to get an electrical ball pump. Lunchmate bucks have provided the school with art supplies and Canadian Tire money has purchased water jugs.
