Did you know there are currently over 40 groups on Facebook related to Capreol, Ontario? Everything from St. Mary’s Capreol Alumni, CR Judd Jaguars to Outdoor Hockey rink.Facebook.com is a great way to meet friends and keep up on what they are doing. Once you add a friend to your Facebook.com friends list you will always know when they are adding to their notes (blog) or updating their profile. Join Facebook.com groups to meet people like you or browse the profiles to find other new friends. Facebook.com's classmates and co-worker search is good for finding friends too. However there are pro’s and con’s to everything PROS * It's Free * It is one of the best ways to find old friends, classmates and co-workers * Great site to organize and share photos * It is constantly changing and adding new features * It doesn't have as many bugs as Myspace * It allows you to show your "status", so people are kept up to date with what you are doing. * You can show events that you are attending * It's easier to find your real friends on Facebook, because the search engine is better * Facebook isn't cluttered with annoying graphics and advertisements * Use the notes feature to create your own simple blog or you can merge your existing blog right into Facebook.com notes. * Easy to manage privacy settings, limited access available * Search and browse for people on Facebook.com using just about anything. CONS * People tend to use social networking sites as a replacement for real human interaction. The more you talk to someone on Facebook, the less likely you are to hang out with them in real life. * It's harder to find new friends on Facebook. The search is meant to only find people who you are already friends with in real life. You can't do an advanced search for people outside of your networks. * There are information fields on Facebook that could potentially make it easier for people to stalk you if you aren't careful. These fields include your email, phone number, and address. You can hide these from certain users or not enter them at all, but many people probably enter that info without thinking, making available to anyone on their friends list * You may spend WAY too much time on it, become addicted * You can not add music to your Facebook.com profile. * You also can not add video to your Facebook.com profile. Playing It Safe Keep the amount of private information you post to a minimum. Never, ever post your address, birthday, telephone number, class schedule, or anything else that you would not want a stranger to know. Do you have to have a photo of yourself in a bathing suit on your profile? Add that along with your address and anyone who liked what they saw could come and find you. Whether it is a potential stalker, a burglar, or stranger why give anyone an open invitation into your life? The Bottom Line If you are addicted to Facebook and can’t give it up, then use it but use it wisely. You are college students. Nobody expects you to be angels. But to flaunt bad behavior especially illegal behavior without any concern for the consequences is dangerous. Post comments to your friends. Have fun. Show off pictures of your get-togethers. Just think twice before posting shots of underage drinking or the hook-ups of the night before. Play it smart, and maybe one day you will be starting your own Facebook group!
